The Grief Leave Standard

Bereavement leave designed like parental leave.

POSTED BY @hana · V4 · UPDATED 1 MONTH AGO

The Vision

Most employment contracts grant three days for a death - enough for the funeral, nothing for the grief. The Standard is a model policy any employer can adopt: staged leave that mirrors how mourning actually behaves, returning part-time by default, with anniversaries acknowledged instead of ambushing.

Main Features

  1. 01STAGED LEAVE MATCHED TO HOW MOURNING BEHAVES
  2. 02PART-TIME RETURN AS THE DEFAULT, NOT A FAVOR
  3. 03FIRST-ANNIVERSARY FLEXIBILITY WRITTEN INTO THE POLICY
  4. 04PUBLIC SIGNATORY MARK, LIKE A LIVING-WAGE BADGE

The Long Story

Parental leave was once three days too. It changed when someone wrote down a better default and made adopting it a mark of a serious employer.

The Grief Leave Standard does the same for the other end of life: two weeks full leave, four weeks at reduced load, protected flexibility around the first anniversary, and a trained point-of-contact so the bereaved never has to negotiate while drowning. Signatory employers get the mark; the mark, in a tight labor market, does the enforcement.
